The East Tennessee State University men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded five consecutive weeks of competition with strong performances at the Lee Fast Break Invitational in Cleveland, Tennessee, on April 11.
The event marked a series of personal bests for both squads. In the men’s division, a freshman secured first place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.01 seconds, finishing more than a second ahead of his competitors. For the women, standout performances included a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 1:03.26—the fastest recorded in the Southern Conference so far this season.
Other notable results for ETSU’s women included a high jump mark of 1.60 meters for second place and an improved personal best in the 3000-meter steeplechase at 11:02.59, earning third place and fourth on the conference leaderboard this season. Additional highlights featured fifth-place finishes in both the women’s discus throw (38.05 meters) and another athlete’s performance in the same event (40.27 meters), as well as strong showings in pole vaulting and high jump.
On the track, Kilkelly set new marks by running an 11th-place finish in the women’s 100 meters at 12.67 seconds while two other teammates posted personal records to finish seventh and eighth respectively in the steeplechase event. Another runner achieved seventh place overall—and sixth among Southern Conference athletes—in Cleveland’s competitive weekend for distance runners.
In men’s events, one competitor recorded this season’s top conference time for the steeplechase at 9:20.52 while another finished fourth overall in pole vaulting with a leap of 4.47 meters along with improvements across sprinting and middle-distance events from several team members.
The Bucs will take two weeks off before heading to Cullowhee for back-to-back competitions: first at Catamount Classic on April 24-25 followed by their return to compete for Southern Conference honors.
