The Southern Conference announced its Player of the Month awards for the month of February, naming ETSU women’s tennis senior Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) as the SoCon Player of the Month in her sport.
Bakhodirova dominated the second month of the year with a perfect 9-0 record, including five singles wins and four doubles wins alongside Mariya Shumeika (Minsk, Belarus) in ETSU’s top-flight. Perhaps the biggest win of the month was a 6-4 victory in doubles over the No. 59 rated team in the nation by ITA — VCU duo Yelizaveta Karlova and Victoria Matasova.
Not only did Bakhodirova win all of her matches, but she did so without losing a set. Her singles wins include the top players from Lipscomb, Belmont, Appalachian State, Davidson and VCU. The Bucs won all five of those matches to start what ended up being a six-match win streak.
In the month of February, Bakhodirova and her teammates achieved the highest ITA ranking since 2010 at No. 67. The Bucs were ranked No. 68 to start the month of March.
On Feb. 21, Bakhodirova made history as the SoCon Player of the Week — her third of the season and the sixth of her career. She leads all active SoCon women’s tennis players in weekly awards and became the first player from a school other than Furman to win six career honors. Only five other players have accomplished this in SoCon women’s tennis.
