Playing on campus for the first time this spring, the ETSU women’s tennis team gave the Saturday morning crowd much to celebrate with a 6-1 win over Radford at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex in Johnson City.
The Bucs are red-hot to start the month of March, owning an 8-3 record with six straight wins. Despite playing with just five singles players and two doubles teams, ETSU won every match contested in straight sets.
Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and Mariya Shumeika (Minsk, Belarus) continued their six-match win streak together with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Radford won the third spot by default, meaning the winners on the second court would get the opening tally.
Playing together for the first time this season, Daniela Rivera (Maturin, Venezuela) and Emilia Alfaro (Azul, Argentina) picked up the doubles point for ETSU shortly after the No. 1 match finished, winning 6-2.
With ETSU down a singles player, Radford started the singles portion with an automatic point to tie things up — but it made no difference. ETSU won all five courts in straight sets, including three shutout sets and five 6-1 sets.
Rivera won first at No. 4 (6-1, 6-0), followed by Shumeika at No. 2 (6-0, 6-1) and Alfaro at No. 3 (6-0, 6-1) to clinch the match for ETSU. Bakhodirova won 6-1, 6-1 in the top flight over Julia Abrams, then Ralitsa Alexandrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) capped things off with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Brooke Murphy.
Bakhodirova and Rivera are each on seven match win streaks, while Alexandrova won her fifth straight.
