It was a tough ending to a promising run in Asheville on Friday, as the No. 3 seeded ETSU women’s basketball team was eliminated in the semifinal round of the 2023 Ingles Southern Conference Championships with a 69-40 loss to No. 2 seed Chattanooga.

ETSU led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter, but the rival Mocs went on a 16-0 run to end the half and used that to build a lead too difficult to overcome. The Bucs never gave up, but Chattanooga’s defense caused scoring opportunities to be scarce.

Sophomore guard Nevaeh Brown (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Bucs with 12 points, while Jakhyia Davis (Knoxville, Tenn.) had a team-high seven rebounds to go with five points.

All-conference players Yazz Wazeerud-Din and Raven Thompson led Chattanooga with 43 combined points, while Thompson added 10 rebounds for the double-double.

The Mocs will move on to face No. 1 Wofford for the SoCon Championship on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Meanwhile, ETSU’s conference tournament run ends with a 23-9 overall record — tying the 2009-10 team for the best record in program history. The Bucs are still hopeful for more postseason basketball beyond the conference tournament, which will be determined in the coming days.

Selection Sunday for March Madness is set for next Sunday, March 12. The brackets for all other potential postseason women’s basketball tournaments will be announced shortly after the NCAA tournament field of 68 is set.
