The ETSU men’s tennis team opened the 2023 season to with a 1-6 loss at Mississippi State on Saturday afternoon in Starkville. The Bucs’ point was secured by Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina) as he won his No. 1 singles match in three sets.

Pernas controlled the way in the first set of his match as he cruised to a 6-2 victory over Nemanja Malesevic. In the second set, Malesevic did not go away easy as he defeated Pernas with a score of 3-6. In the third set, Pernas battled back to secure the Bucs’ lone win with 10-4 victory.

In his doubles match, the partnership of Pernas and Peter Kalocsai led 4-3 in flight two. The match ended incomplete after Mississippi State earned the doubles point by winning the other two doubles matches.

Gregor Ramskogler (MS) def. James Sim (ETSU) 6-4, 7-5

Peter Kalocsai/Thiago Pernas (ETSU) def. Ewen Lumsden/Michal Novansky (MS) 4-3

Records: ETSU 0-1; Mississippi State 1-0.
