East Tennessee State University Bucs capture two golds in opener of VMI Invitational

The ETSU track and field program opened its indoor season by capturing a pair of gold medals on day one of the VMI Invitational, which got underway on Friday inside the VMI Corps Physical Training Facility.

Rebekah Howard (Ashland, Ky.) and Karli Townsell (Statesville, N.C.) both won their first individual collegiate gold medals in their respective events. Howard, coming off a strong cross country campaign, won the 1000m with a time of 3:04.15, which was six seconds faster than hear nearest competitor.

Meanwhile, Townsell – competing in her first collegiate indoor track and field meet – captured gold in the 5000m as she clocked in with a time of 19:11.02, also five seconds better than her nearest competitor.

With a pair of Buccaneer women student-athletes winning gold on day one in Lexington, sophomore Diana Romero-Barba (Tepatitlan de Morelos, Jalisco, Mexico) won silver in the pole vault. Romero-Barba posted a mark of 3.45m.

On the men’s side Phelani Maduwa (Parys, Free State, South Africa) and Evan Guzman (Franklin, Tenn.) both came away with bronze medals.

Maduwa earned bronze in the 500m as he clocked in at 1:04.43, while Guzman placed third in the 1000m with a mark of 2:30.61.

The men’s DMR team earned a silver as they posted a time of 10:29.17.
