It was worth the wait.
After Hurricane Ian moved the Buccaneers’ game from Sunday to Monday, the ETSU women’s soccer team was ready for the test as the Blue and Gold secured a 1-0 win over The Citadel on Monday afternoon from Washington Light Infantry Field.
Playing their second consecutive game on the road, the Bucs improved to 3-5-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the SoCon.
SCORING
- 65’ – Lindsey Cook (Greenville, Tenn.) scored her first goal of the season from a free kick.
- In a scoreless first half, ETSU goalkeeper Shu Ohba (Fujisawa, Japan) recorded six saves from 12 shots by The Citadel.
- The Bucs found their first shot in the 33rd minute from a free kick by Kyra Ranvek (Knoxville, Tenn.), which was saved by The Citadel goalkeeper, Jess Newton.
- In the 65th minute of the contest the Bucs won a free kick, which Cook scored on to give ETSU the 1-0 lead.
- Minutes later, in the 69th minute, The Citadel was awarded a penalty which struck off the post, keeping the score 1-0 in favor of the Bucs.
- The Bucs found another opportunity in the 70th minute as Nele Bauer (Bammental, Germany) tried a shot that was saved by the Bulldogs’ goalkeeper.
- In the final seconds off the contest, Ohba saved three shots to keep The Citadel scoreless.
- The Bucs posted their second consecutive shutout in the SoCon.
- The Bucs were outshot 24-5, but all five shots by ETSU landed on target.
- The backline trio of Madi Hook (Fareham, England), Taylor Limprevil (Spring Hill, Tenn.) and Sydney Somogyi (Germantown, Tenn.) played all 90 minutes for the Bucs.
- Ohba recorded a total of nine saves – three coming in the second half.
- With the loss The Citadel – who defeated preseason favorite Samford earlier in conference play – moved to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the SoCon.
The Bucs will return to action Friday when they host VMI, set for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
