Led by redshirt sophomore Rebekah Howard (Ashland, Ky.), the ETSU women’s cross country team finished third in Friday’s USC Upstate Eye Opener, held at the Milliken Research Center in Spartanburg, S.C.
In their first meet of the 2022 season, the Bucs totaled 100 points, finishing behind a pair of Southern Conference foes. Furman, the nine-time defending conference champion, took the top five scoring spots (seven overall) en route to posting 15 points, while Wofford finished runner-up with 83 points.
Howard, who recorded the first top-10 finish of her collegiate career, turned in a personal best on a 5K course as she clocked in at 19:21.6. The time was 20 seconds faster than her previous best, set at last year’s North Alabama Showcase (19:41.9).
Jessica Lord (Morristown, Tenn.) was the next Buccaneer to cross the finish line as she came in 17th with a time of 19:48.4. A pair of Bucs making their collegiate debuts – Camryn Johnson (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Sophie Beach (Boone, N.C.) – came in 22nd (19:59.3) and 24th (20:30.5), respectively.
Furman’s Abigail Robertson won the race with a time of 17:49.7.
The Bucs return to action on Friday, Sept. 16 when ETSU heads to Blacksburg for the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational.
