Emily Morrell, a doctoral student in history at West Virginia University who grew up in Greeneville, gave an excellent lecture tonight about former slave John Gloucester, who attended classes at Greeneville College, a predecessor name for Tusculum University. Gloucester was once a slave of a Presbyterian minister named Gideon Blackburn, who was also a subject of Morrell's talk. Morrell's talk was the first in the three-part summer series "Sketches of East Tennessee History." The next talk will be ‘The Rail-splitter and the Tailor’: Efforts to Bind Andrew Johnson’s Legacy to Lincoln in the Early-20th Century” by Dr. Jeffrey Perry, assistant professor of history at Tusculum, at 6 p.m. June 22 in the Meen Center lecture hall. The talks are free, but donations are welcome.
