Cost of college went up for all students at East Tennessee State University

In-state tuition and fees rose 2.9 percent for 2018-19 at East Tennessee State University, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Tennessee residents paid $8,935 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $256 more than the $8,679 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 204.4 percent more than residents this year, or $27,199. Their price tag grew 2.8 percent from $26,463 in 2017-18.

About 80 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Tennessee residents. About 19 percent are residents of other states and 1 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 97 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 1,887 students received grants or scholarships totaling $19.3 million and 990 students took out student loans totaling more than $5.7 million.

Including all undergraduates (14,317), 8,936 students used grants or scholarships totaling $88.1 million, and 5,250 students took out $34.1 million in federal student loans.
