A grand slam by Jackson Marshall in the sixth inning helped the University of Connecticut defeat the East Tennessee State University baseball team 4-3, according to a May 3 announcement. The loss moved the Buccaneers’ record to 29-16 for the season.
The game was closely contested, with ETSU taking an early lead after home runs from Ferguson and Little in the first two innings. Ferguson’s solo home run marked his third in as many games against UConn. Little followed with an opposite field solo shot in the second inning, putting ETSU ahead 2-0.
ETSU pitchers combined to allow only three hits during Sunday’s game, their fewest since February. Jones started on the mound and allowed three runs over five innings before being relieved. Carwile and Grass contributed strong performances out of the bullpen, combining for five strikeouts over 2.1 perfect innings.
Marshall’s grand slam shifted momentum to UConn after they loaded the bases at the start of the sixth inning. ETSU responded with an RBI single from Galusky in their next turn at bat but could not overcome UConn’s one-run lead despite getting runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings.
The Buccaneers are scheduled to return home on Tuesday for a matchup against Radford, where they will honor their senior class before a planned first pitch at Thomas Stadium.
