The East Tennessee State University (ETSU) women’s tennis team is set to play two matches in Virginia this weekend, facing No. 69 Liberty on Friday and Memphis on Saturday. The Buccaneers are currently on a six-match winning streak, having improved their season record to 7-2 after a series of non-conference victories and a strong start in the Southern Conference (SoCon).

ETSU began the season with one win and two losses but has since defeated teams including Tusculum, Murray State, Lipscomb, and Virginia Tech. In conference play, they have recorded wins over Western Carolina and UNC Greensboro. With their current record, ETSU holds the second-highest winning percentage in the SoCon, trailing only Chattanooga.

Liberty enters the weekend with an 8-3 overall record and remains undefeated at home with five wins. The Lady Flames recently moved up to No. 69 in the ITA National Team Rankings following victories against Marshall and ECU.

Memphis comes into Lynchburg holding a 2-9 record for the season. Their two wins came against Southeast Missouri State and then-No. 52 Columbia. Five of Memphis’s matches this spring have been against nationally-ranked opponents.

There is limited historical competition between ETSU and these upcoming opponents. ETSU leads Liberty 5-1 all-time, last defeating them in 2019 by a score of 4-0. Against Memphis, ETSU trails historically with two wins in five meetings; their most recent victory over Memphis was in 2001.
