ETSU track and field teams begin outdoor season at Charlotte 49er Classic

The East Tennessee State University men’s and women’s track and field teams will start their 2026 outdoor season at the Charlotte 49er Classic in Charlotte, North Carolina, from March 19 to March 21. The event will be held at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center, with multis beginning on Thursday afternoon and most events starting Friday at 11 a.m.

The meet marks the first outdoor competition of the year for ETSU. Athletes from both teams are set to compete in a range of events, including sprints, distance races, jumps, throws, and multi-events.

On the men’s side, athletes are entered in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter sprints as well as various distance events. One athlete will compete in the decathlon for the second consecutive year at this meet. In field events, a transfer from Charleston Southern University and a sophomore will lead a young group; Brown is scheduled to participate in shot put and hammer throw while Winegar will compete in discus and javelin. A Davenport University transfer tops ETSU’s vaulters ahead of the event and aims to improve upon his previous best mark of 4.51 meters set in 2025.

For the women’s team, SoCon indoor gold medalist Micaliah Cook is set to run in both the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints. Cook is also the reigning SoCon outdoor champion in both the 200-meter and 400-meter sprints. Another athlete will represent ETSU in discus and hammer throw events while one competitor enters the heptathlon.
