East Tennessee State University’s softball team has earned both the Player and Pitcher of the Week honors from the Southern Conference, as announced on Monday. This marks the first time this season that ETSU has received these weekly awards.

The Buccaneers have started their season with a 9-1 record, which is the best in program history. Their recent performance included two wins over Alabama A&M, contributing to this strong start.

The SoCon Player of the Week award went to an ETSU athlete who had a productive weekend at the plate. She went three for five, drew three walks, drove in three runs, scored once herself without striking out, and stole two bases. One of her stolen bases resulted in a run scored. In the first game against Alabama A&M, her singles and base running helped tie and then secure a 4-3 victory for ETSU. Defensively, she recorded two putouts and achieved a career-high with three assists during the weekend series.

For pitching honors, another ETSU player was recognized for her relief effort in one of the games against Alabama A&M. Entering at the start of the fifth inning with ETSU trailing 3-2, she held Alabama A&M scoreless and hitless over three innings while striking out four batters—tying her season high—and did not allow any walks or hits. Her performance helped secure a comeback win for ETSU.

Both athletes were honored as Pitcher of the Week and Player of the Week by the Southern Conference on March 2.
