The East Tennessee State University (ETSU) baseball team secured an 8-2 win against UNC Greensboro on March 21, evening the weekend series at one game each. The victory improved ETSU’s overall record to 15-6 and brought its conference record to 1-1.
This result is significant for ETSU as it follows a loss in the previous game and helps maintain momentum in conference play. The team’s performance was highlighted by strong contributions from both hitters and pitchers.
Three ETSU players accounted for seven of the team’s ten hits, with one player going 3-for-5 and scoring twice, another finishing 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run, and a third going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. One player hit his third home run of the season, while another reached base three times with a double and two walks. The Buccaneers’ offense started early, scoring in the first inning after singles from multiple players led to the game’s opening run. Two more runs followed in the second inning, giving ETSU an early lead.
On the mound, ETSU used only two pitchers. The starter worked five innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four batters to earn his third win of the season. Rolison took over for the final four innings, retiring all batters he faced and recording three strikeouts to earn his first save for ETSU.
UNC Greensboro narrowed the gap with runs in the second and third innings but was held scoreless afterward. In the sixth inning, ETSU broke open the game by sending ten batters to the plate and scoring five runs on three hits, including a key three-run home run by Matlock.
The teams will meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. in Greensboro for the rubber match of their series. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+. More information about Buccaneer baseball can be found at ETSUBucs.com.
