East Tennessee State University’s softball team lost to UNC Greensboro on March 22, dropping the series finale 0-9 at Betty Basler Field. The defeat leaves the Buccaneers winless after their opening weekend of league play, with a record of 12-11 overall and 0-3 in the Southern Conference.

The loss is significant as it marks a challenging start for ETSU in conference competition. UNC Greensboro improved its record to 22-12 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

UNC Greensboro collected a season-high eight walks from ETSU’s pitching staff and combined them with eight hits to secure the victory. A two-run home run opened scoring for the Spartans, while an error by ETSU contributed to seven additional runs crossing the plate. Offensively, ETSU struggled, managing only three hits and one walk during the game.

Several individual performances stood out despite the loss. One player extended her hitting streak to seven consecutive games, which is currently the longest on the squad. Another pitcher threw three innings with two putouts from popups and one strikeout, while another tallied a season-high two strikeouts. Defensively, one player recorded six putouts—including a diving catch on a bunt—while another tied her career-high with three assists for the second straight contest.

ETSU totaled 24 at-bats, three hits, drew one walk, and tallied four assists through 21 putouts during Sunday’s game.

Looking ahead, East Tennessee State will continue league play March 28-29 in Greenville, South Carolina against Furman for its first Southern Conference road series of the season.
